Porcelain fillings are commonly referred to as either an inlay or an onlay.
An inlay is a porcelain filling that is seated in the central biting surface of the tooth.
An onlay is when the porcelain filling extends out to also replace the exterior surfaces of the tooth (see image).
The restorations size, location and condition of the remaining tooth, determine whether resin filling material or porcelain will produce the best long-term result. For larger restorations and replacements of big, old amalgam fillings, a porcelain inlay or onlay is ideal. They’re incredibly strong, durable, produce beautiful results, and protect your tooth from further damage (cracks and wear). All porcelain inlays/onlays can be done in a single visit using our CEREC Cad/cam technology.
